Wisconsin is a dog lover’s paradise, and what better way to enjoy your vacation than by bringing your furry friend along? In this article, we will provide a list of dog friendly vacation rentals in the state of Wisconsin. From cabins to cottages to condos, we have you covered! So pack your bags and bring your dog along on your next Wisconsin getaway.
Wisconsin is the perfect destination for a dog-friendly getaway. With so many scenic trails and beautiful parks to explore, your pup will be in dog heaven! And what better way to relax after a long day of hiking than by cuddling up with your furry friend in front of a cozy fireplace?
General things to consider with dog friendly vacation rentals
Here is a simple list of a few things to keep in mind when you travel with Fido:
Leash Laws
When traveling with your dog in Wisconsin, be sure to abide by the local area’s leash laws. Most say that dogs must be leashed at all times when outdoors, with the exception of dog parks and designated off-leash areas. Failure to comply could result in a fine. In some areas, voice control is OK – but do your homework first.
Unattended Animals
Most property owners frown on you leaving your dog behind unless you have brought your own kennel and use it to keep your dog in. If your dog has separation anxiety they will bark a lot to disrupt your temporary neighbors or can be destructive to the rental property – which will really cost you.
Poop Pick-up
Last but not least, always remember to clean up after your dog! Most dog-friendly vacation rentals will provide poop bags and/or a designated area for dog waste. But if not, be sure to bring your own.
There are strict laws in place regarding dog waste disposal, and failure to clean up after your dog can result in a fine too.
Property Specific Rules
Please review the vacation rental policies for where dogs are and aren’t allowed before booking. Yes, they will be allowed in the house or cabin – most have a pet fee for this purpose.
Can you take the dog to their beach if they have one? Is there a dog friendly beach close? Do they allow dogs on the furniture? Make sure you know all the rules for the dog friendly place you rent off this list.
Service Dogs
Service Dogs are an exception to pet fees, per the ADA. I suggest you confer with each place when you are booking if you have a real service dog. Not an emotional support animal (ESA) or Therapy Dog. One that is trained to handle a specific task for one person. How to Spot a Fake Service Dog is a great article to familiarize yourself with.
Is it illegal to fake a service dog? The majority of states have passed laws regarding fraudulent service dogs and emotional support animals—and many new bills were introduced during the 2018 legislative session in states without current laws. Soon it will be a Federal Offense.
Please do not spoil it for those who really need it and use one. Being a jerk can cause a problem for that 5-year-old with a dog to help them with their diabetes.
Plan ahead
You will see my own dog, Tazuna, on the red blanket above. That is OUR blanket that I bring with us. She knows not to be on any furniture without it. I also bring a handheld vacuum to catch the extra floof from the double layer coat an Australian Shepherd has. We have our own collapseable bowl set instead of pulling bowls out of the cabin cupboards. She is an authentic service dog and we can take her anywhere, but we want to make life easier for the people who would be cleaning up after us.
Figure out your own needs and plan ahead.
Dog Friendly Vacation Rentals
I figured it would be easiest to list them by city, in alphabetical order. Please let us know if you know of one that should be added to our list.
