In Vernon, France, Château Bizzy boasts a rich history that spans centuries. Originally constructed in the 14th century, the château has been home to generations of notable families who left their mark on its design and legacy.
My first glimpse of Château Bizzy was like stepping into a dream. The expansive grounds and fantastical fountains immediately transported me back in time. The Owners and Their Vision
From the 14th century, the lands of Bizy have been under the stewardship of the Jubert family. In 1675, Nicolas Jubert de Bouville, a State Councilor and intendant of Orléans, elevated the seigneury of Bizy to a marquisate and constructed the first residential château on the grounds.
In 1721, the estate passed to the Duke of Belle-Isle, grandson of Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV’s superintendent of finance. While the Duke retained the original château built by Jubert de Bouville, he poured his attention into transforming the grounds.
He created a sophisticated hydraulic network to supply water to the estate and designed elaborate gardens with fountains and water features. These enhancements earned Château Bizy the nickname “Little Versailles.” The Duke, who became Marshal of France in 1741, even hosted Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour at the château in 1749.
Upon the Duke of Belle-Isle’s death in 1759, the estate was bequeathed to King Louis XV, who later exchanged it with the Count of Eu for the principality of Dombes. It eventually became the property of Louis Jean de Bourbon, Duke of Penthièvre, a man renowned for his immense wealth and compassion for the poor.
Despite the upheavals of the French Revolution, the Duke remained a beloved figure, known for his philanthropy and humility. After his death in 1793, the château’s fortunes waned as it was declared national property and abandoned.
In 1805, General Le Suire purchased the estate and constructed a more modest residence using the remaining structures of the barnyard built by the Duke of Belle-Isle. Under the Restoration, the property returned to the Orléans family, with King Louis-Philippe frequently staying at the château and making further improvements, including English-style gardens and glass galleries.
By the mid-19th century, the estate had passed through several hands, eventually coming under the ownership of Baron Schikler in 1858. The baron, along with architect William Henry White, preserved elements of Louis-Philippe’s renovations while adding a neoclassical central building that still stands today. In 1909, the château was inherited by Louis Suchet, fourth Duke of Albufera, and it remains under the stewardship of his descendant, Madame Isabelle Suchet de Albufera, to this day.
