Don’t get me wrong, we love Culver’s, but in this age of frozen custard we love to find an actual ice cream shop! The simplicity of the taste, the complexity of the flavors, and the explosion of taste on our tongues. Now, we aren’t talking about soft serve here – but simply darned good ice cream. Here is why Heyn’s Ice Cream is a Must Visit in Iowa City!
Since 1989, Heyn’s Ice Cream has been a staple for the locals in Iowa City. Boasting over 40 flavors, all made with quality ingredients.
Heyn’s Ice Cream in Iowa City
Heyn’s premium ice cream is made with 14% buttermilk fat content, 4% more than the minimum needed. This means they create a denser, creamier, awesome-er ice cream just for us! I really think that is what makes for some of the best ice cream.
When you walk into their store for the first time, it is like stepping back into time. The old woodwork, handwritten chalkboards boasting their entire menu, and “soda jerks” behind the counter with a big smile on their faces.
It was difficult to pick our flavors, but samples were freely offered to taste flavors and see if we found our match for the day. We knew we would try the waffle cones as the smell taunted us from the moment we entered, and they often contain generous servings.
Oh, and did we mention they have gluten-free, vegan, and dairy-free options? I personally fell in love with this Lemon Custard that was light, refreshing and it totally hit the spot on a hot day. I think it is my personal favorite.
Miss Sarah took her flavor in a dish because she was still full of Mellow Mushroom pizza and thought she could save it. By adding a lid to it, it did keep up well overnight in our hotel fridge/freezer and she enjoyed it for breakfast!

Honestly, I can’t list them all, but here were a few of the amazing ones we looked at that would treat your taste buds:
- Monster Mash Ice Cream had Vanilla Ice Cream, Cookie Dough, Peanut Butter, and M&M’s
- Cookie Dough had Vanilla Ice Cream, Cookie Dough, and Chocolate Chips
- Blueberry Cheesecake had Cheesecake Ice Cream, Swirls of Blueberry, and Graham Cracker Crust
- Cappuccino Chunk had Coffee Ice Cream, Coffee-Flavored Chocolate Chunks, and Mocha Swirl
- Chocolate Covered Cherries had Cherry Ice Cream, Maraschino Cherries, and Chocolate Chunks
- Black Raspberry Truffle had Black Raspberry Ice Cream and Raspberry Truffles
- Kara’s Creation had Vanilla Ice Cream, Pralines, Oreos, and Swirls of Caramel
Don’t they all just sound amazing? I can only imagine getting banana splits with a variety of those fun flavors.

Compared to the world of frozen custard? These prices were beyond reasonable. Three bucks for a very generous serving of 14% butterfat-filled goodness.
