If you’re looking for the ultimate Halloween experience — one that combines spine-chilling thrills, jaw-dropping decorations, and a touch of quirky fun — Nightmare on Chicago Street in Elgin, Illinois, is the place to be. I spent an action-packed weekend with my teen, and let me tell you, this event was nothing short of unforgettable.

Nightmare on Chicago Street isn’t your average haunted house. From the moment you step onto the streets of Elgin, you’re transported into a twisted, eerie version of the city — complete with haunted hayrides, creepy creatures lurking around every corner, and live actors ready to spook you at every turn. This year, October 25th will be the date to mark for Nightmare on Chicago Street, and tickets are available here.
Arriving in Elgin and Dining in Style
We kicked off our adventure with a stay at Holiday Inn & Suites Chicago Northwest – Elgin, which provided the perfect central base for our explorations. After checking in and getting our welcome packets (with tickets and gift cards), we headed straight to Buckingham’s Steakhouse at the Grand Victoria Casino.
Dining at Buckingham’s was a treat — a sophisticated steakhouse experience where we savored classic favorites like filet mignon and shrimp cocktail. The elegant atmosphere made it the perfect setting to kick off a night of haunting adventures. My teen was all in for the hearty meals, and we both enjoyed the cozy yet upscale vibe of the place.
The Dark Hollows Haunted Hayride
After dinner, we made our way to Camp Big Timber for the highly anticipated Dark Hollows Haunted Hayride. The creepy atmosphere set the tone for the night as we embarked on a hayride through cursed woods. From nightmare-inducing monsters to madmen lurking in the shadows, the hayride was a full-on scare-fest. I was thrilled to see my teen jump out of their seat — the kind of bonding moment we didn’t realize we needed.

Breakfast and Shopping in Elgin
The next morning, we headed over to Eastside Café in downtown East Dundee for breakfast. The coffee flights were a hit, and the laid-back vibe of this café made it the perfect place to fuel up before another full day of adventure.
Then, it was time to explore the local shops in East and West Dundee. We hit up Half Full Nest, a vintage-artisan market that feels more like a treasure hunt with curated finds and eclectic displays. The quirky mix of antiques, art, and gourmet goods had us both talking about which items we would buy (if only we had more room in the suitcase!).

Next, we wandered over to Boxwood Home Design & Cabinetry Co., where the seasonal décor had me ready to redo my entire home. Both shops provided the perfect mix of charm and creative inspiration.
For lunch, we dropped by Emmett’s Brewing Company in West Dundee. Not only is this historic spot home to craft beers, but the delicious food makes it a great spot to relax and regroup. The building itself — an old fixture in the National Register of Historic Places — added to the atmosphere, and the kids loved the variety of choices on the menu.

Elgin History Museum and Nightmare on Chicago Street
After lunch, we headed to State Street Market for more local shopping. This indoor market offers over 35 small, independently owned businesses and is a perfect stop for picking up unique souvenirs or quirky gifts. We also visited the Elgin History Museum, housed in a 19th-century building, where we learned about the local history, including the famous Elgin Watch Factory and more about the area’s early pioneers.
Nightmare on Chicago Street is the Halloween event not to be missed in Elgin. With several streets blocked off, the entire area was transformed into a haunted wonderland. From live mannequins in store windows to people in incredible group costumes, you never knew what you’d see next. The massive life-sized spider web maze alone was worth the visit, but throw in food trucks, live music, and zombie car crashes, and you’ve got a spooky experience like no other.
We spent hours walking through the event, exploring all the creepy corners and bumping into other visitors enjoying the festivities. My teen was hooked — and it’s safe to say we both left with plenty of spine-tingling memories.

Winding Down with More Fall Fun
On Sunday morning, we grabbed breakfast at Alexander’s Café, located just down the street from the hotel. Known for its fresh fish and hearty home-cooked meals, it was a perfect spot to refuel before our final day in Elgin.
Then it was off to Santa’s Village Pumpkin Patch and Fall Festival in East Dundee. This place offers something for everyone, with a petting zoo, fall-themed attractions, and of course, a pumpkin patch. My teen had a blast with the rides, and we even took a few photos with the pumpkins before heading out for one last treat.
We ended the trip with a stop at Milk House Ice Cream in Pingree Grove for a quick cone. Their ice cream Flight was an easy choice — because when in Illinois, you have to treat yourself to local, handmade ice cream before hitting the road home.

Halloween Tips for Visiting with Teens
If you’re traveling with teens to Nightmare on Chicago Street, here are a few tips to make the most of your visit.
- Set expectations early: Let your teen know exactly what to expect — this isn’t your typical Halloween event, so prepare them for scares and intense moments. They’ll appreciate being in the loop and can manage their expectations for the event.
- Comfortable shoes are a must: You’ll be doing a lot of walking and standing, so make sure everyone wears comfy, durable shoes.
- Take breaks: The event is packed with lots of visual stimulation and scary moments, so be sure to find time for a rest at food trucks or live music spots to recharge.
- Safety first: While the event is fun, it’s crowded, and there are people in costumes who may be overly enthusiastic. Make sure to stick together, have a meeting point, and keep your phone charged for easy contact.
- Embrace the costumes: This is an event where group costumes are common, so encourage your teen to have fun and dress up! There’s no such thing as “too over-the-top” here.
