It doesn’t take rocket science to figure out that the Traveling Cheesehead Cocktail features brandy. After all, I am from the Badger state, and Wisconsin has a long history of loving its brandy.
From our beloved Brandy Old Fashioned Sweet to even a Brandy Alexander, we consume roughly half of what Korbel creates in California. Yes, if you order a Bourbon Old Fashioned, we will look at you like you are a heathen and pray for you…
What exactly IS Brandy?
Brandy is a spirit that is distilled from wine and aged in oak barrels, which gives it a unique taste and character. The aging process imparts flavors of vanilla, caramel, and oak to the brandy, while also softening the harsher flavors of the base wine. This results in a complex and layered flavor profile that can range from light and fruity to rich and full-bodied, depending on the type of grape used, the aging process, and the production methods employed by the distillery.
One of the key factors that can influence the taste of brandy is the type of grape used to make the base wine. Different grape varieties have different flavor profiles, and this can have a significant impact on the taste of the resulting brandy.
Another factor is the age of the brandy and the type of oak barrel used in the aging process. French oak barrels, for example, tend to impart a more subtle flavor than American oak barrels, which can result in a smoother and more refined taste.
Additionally, the manufacturing process used by different distilleries can also impact the taste of the brandy. Some distilleries may use traditional methods, such as copper pot stills, while others may use modern, high-tech equipment to produce their brandy. The fermentation process, the amount of time the brandy is aged, and the blending process can also all play a role in creating a unique flavor profile.
Overall, the taste of brandy can vary widely between different manufacturers and even between different batches of the same brandy. This diversity and complexity are part of what makes brandy such a fascinating and rewarding spirit to explore and enjoy.
Why Does Wisconsin Love Brandy?
Wisconsin has a long history of brandy consumption and production, which has led to the state becoming known as a brandy-loving state. The popularity of brandy in Wisconsin can be traced back to the state’s large population of German and Polish immigrants, who brought with them a love of brandy from their homelands. Brandy was also popular among the French fur traders who settled in the state in the early 19th century.
A World’s Fair
When did this love affair with brandy start? The rumors vary between two main theories. Some say it was the Chicago World’s Fair that was close enough for so many to hop on a train to check out – and hit that exhibit by Korbel. It was a fun new novelty.
War Surplus
Some say a massive amount of brandy flooded the state just after World War II ended sitting in American oak barrels. After prohibition and the war, getting good booze was still challenging, so Wisconsinites had to choose between lousy liquor and good brandy. The good brandy won, and bartenders let their creativity fly.
An Old Fashioned Reason
Another reason for the popularity of brandy in Wisconsin is its association with the Old Fashioned cocktail, a drink that is particularly beloved in the state. The Wisconsin-style Old Fashioned is made with brandy, rather than the more common whiskey or bourbon used in other parts of the country. This variation of the drink has become so iconic that it has been declared the official state cocktail of Wisconsin.
We Make It
In addition to the cultural and historical factors that have contributed to the popularity of brandy in Wisconsin, the state also has a thriving brandy industry. There are several distilleries in the state that produce high-quality brandy, including the popular Copper & Kings distillery in Milwaukee.
Many of these distilleries also offer tours and tastings, making it easy for brandy enthusiasts to explore and support the local industry.
Overall, the love of brandy in Wisconsin can be attributed to a combination of cultural heritage, history, the popularity of the Old Fashioned cocktail, and a thriving local industry. Whether sipped neat or enjoyed in a cocktail, brandy remains an important part of Wisconsin’s drinking culture.
Regardless, it tends to run in the family – a preference or recipe passed down through families to the point that Brandy became a Wisconsin Institution. It certainly doesn’t hurt that our vast collection of legendary Supper Clubs flourished and embraced it.
