Traveling with teens can be a tricky balance. You want enough adventure to keep them off their phones, enough downtime to avoid eye rolls, and enough food stops to keep everyone fueled. That’s exactly why Shores & Islands Ohio was such a win for us. From roller coasters and parasailing to island-hopping and giraffe feeding, our Lake Erie getaway delivered nonstop fun — and yes, even a few moments of family bonding.

A Warm Welcome in Sandusky

We kicked things off with a stay at Sawmill Creek Resort, the perfect home base for exploring. Our welcome bag was waiting in the room — tickets, gift cards, and itineraries that kept us on track. Pro tip for parents: having it all pre-organized meant no fumbling around when the teens were already itching to head out.

Dinner that night was at Dockside Café in downtown Sandusky. Outdoor tables, burgers and tacos, live music, and a waterfront view made it an instant hit. Teens love a place where they can grab casual food and still feel like part of the scene, and Dockside delivered.

Roller Coasters & Parasailing Thrills

Day two was a teen dream: a full day at Cedar Point. With 71 rides, three kids’ areas, and a massive waterpark, there was zero chance of boredom. My teens went straight for the record-breaking coasters — Steel Vengeance and Millennium Force — while I was happy to pace myself on some of the less terrifying rides.

A Key parenting tip here: let the teens roam free. Set a meet-up spot in advance. Teens will want to do their thing without the parents hanging around, and you will want the peace of mind.

While the teens were off chasing all that adrenaline on the coasters, I added parasailing with North Coast Parasail. Soaring over Lake Erie, feet dangling above the water, was one of those moments where time slows down and you are just grinning.

Island Time at Put-in-Bay

On day three, we hopped on the Jet Express Ferry to Put-in-Bay. Teens love the independence of exploring by golf cart, so we rented one from Boathouse Cart & Bike Rental and cruised the island.

Highlights?

When you’re traveling with teens, the magic formula is simple: keep things fun, keep things moving, and make sure there are plenty of snack breaks. Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island checks all those boxes — and then some. This Lake Erie gem mixes history, quirky attractions, and pure summer fun in a way that kept my teen engaged and smiling the whole day.

Heineman Winery and Crystal Cave. Even if wine tasting isn’t your family’s thing, the novelty of stepping inside the world’s largest celestite geode was enough to wow everyone. Wandering through glittering blue crystals 40 feet below ground felt like discovering another planet.

For something sweet, we couldn’t resist the Chocolate Museum. Equal parts history lesson and sugar rush, it offered a look at chocolate’s fascinating backstory, plus samples that made it one of those “this is educational, I promise” moments. A little extra bribery never hurts when traveling with teens.

Back in the heart of downtown Put-in-Bay, we strolled along the pier, soaking up the buzz of shops, restaurants, and live entertainment. A ride on Kimberly’s Carousel — one of the oldest carousels in the country — added a dash of nostalgia and a touch of whimsy to the day. It’s impossible not to smile when you’re circling around on a hand-carved horse, even if your teen pretends to roll their eyes.

By the time we headed back to the mainland, one last stop was a must: Toft’s Dairy in Sandusky, Ohio’s oldest dairy. With 51 hard-dip flavors to choose from, it was the easiest “yes” moment of the trip. A couple of cones in hand, we sat back, enjoyed the Ohio sunshine, and agreed this island escape had been just the right mix of adventure and indulgence.t was the easiest “yes” moment of the trip.

Waffles & Wildlife

Our last morning started with Liege waffles at Wake Up and Waffle — think waffles turned into savory sandwiches or piled with sweet toppings. Teens don’t argue with waffles for breakfast.

Then it was off to African Safari Wildlife Park in Port Clinton. Imagine giraffes poking their heads into your car, zebras and bison coming up for snacks, and teens squealing while trying to snap selfies. The walk-through safari added more animals and educational programs, making it a fun mix of wow-factor and learning.

Why Shores & Islands Ohio Works for Families with Teens

Here’s the magic: Shores & Islands Ohio offers just the right mix of thrills, chill, and food — the holy trinity for traveling with teens. The kids felt like they had freedom (whether racing down roller coasters or steering a golf cart), but we still had plenty of shared experiences that brought us together.

✨ If You Go: Teen-Travel Tips for Shores & Islands Ohio

  • Stay Connected: Cedar Point and the islands are big. Set a family meet-up spot and time so teens can explore independently while you relax.
  • Fuel Often: Keep snacks and water handy. Between coasters, kayaking, and safaris, your crew will burn energy fast.
  • Mix Adventure with Downtime: Balance high-energy days (Cedar Point, parasailing) with laid-back fun (ice cream stops, ferry rides, casual meals).
  • Let Them Document: Teens love to capture their adventures. Encourage them to snap photos — it’s part of how they’ll remember the trip.
  • Plan Together: Involve them in choosing what to do each day. Giving teens some ownership reduces pushback and keeps everyone happier.

From tacos on the waterfront to giraffes at the car window, our Shores & Islands Ohio trip was packed with laughs, thrills, and yes, even a few rare teen-approved moments of family bonding.
