From its prime location in the heart of downtown to its luxurious accommodations and top-notch service, the 106 Jefferson is sure to please. Here we’ll take a closer look at this amazing hotel!
The Service
First I want to touch on the amazing level of service that is brought to the table here. It was mentioned that the name of the hotel is the address – because that is what you give friends and family. That is how they want you to feel as if you are a guest in their home instead of at a corporate property.
I didn’t think I was going to make it to Huntsville and the travel conference I was attending as we had Covid in January and were pretty sick. I was cleared to travel and my interaction with the amazing staff started with a phone call to Mary Beth as I missed the room block for our group. Don’t get me wrong, she was totally professional as she hooked me up but it was like talking to that cousin you haven’t seen in a while.
Little did I know that was simply the tip of the staff experience! It trickles down to each individual team member I came across during my stay.
When I checked in? The young man at the counter couldn’t find my information and was trying to keep me assured as he hunted through the computer – guaranteeing me that I would have a place to stay. I was soon found, with a simple spelling error of my last name, and can’t fault anyone for that as I barely had a voice on my call with Mary Beth just 2 weeks prior.
So many tiny moments of interaction with the staff at 106 Jefferson made it feel like family and not a business, from asking where was a great local place to get coffee to that server who found a fresh biscuit hiding in the kitchen for their killer biscuits and gravy when the breakfast buffet was out.
The morning we were flying out the wonderful gal at the front counter brewed a fresh pot of coffee at 4:30 AM so my friend Roxie could take a cuppa on the road – her in-room Keurig was out of order.
The 106 Jefferson Hotel Knows the Little Things
This is where they really shine. Anything you can think of? They have it already thought of and taken care of. From the little automatically sensed night light under the big bathroom mirror that lets you make that midnight pit stop without having to turn on the lights to the fresh flowers in the lobby. I even love the abstract “moon” art behind the front guest counter that ties the property in nicely to its home in Rocket City.
They even have little spider monkey stuffies for sale to tie in with their Baker and Able restaurant – which is named after the monkeys that were part of the original Marshall Space Flight Center.
The Rooms at the 106 Jefferson Hotel
The rooms are just as you would expect from a luxury hotel, with top-notch amenities and plenty of space. The beds are comfortable and there is plenty of storage for your things. I really loved the large bathroom with the big, soft towels.
The fact that they “get” travelers of today is awesome – plenty of outlets for the tech and even USB ports built right in. I simply hate hotel rooms that have only two outlets – and they are used by the lamps and TV.
I appreciated the digital key – that was even required to go up to my floor in the elevator. That really alleviates any fear of strangers having access to your room – when you are a single female traveler you hear “all the stories” of creeps trying to gain access to your room at strange hours of the night.
That added security creates a wonderful peace of mind for a solo traveler!
The History of 106 Jefferson
While this hotel is a newer property, they did repurpose items from the previous building on the property. I LOVE reclaimed items as they stay out of landfills and keep us from having to use resources to generate new supplies.
The 106 Jefferson sits on the same land as the Historic Huntsville Hotel – which was opened 160 years prior. The old hotel was the epitome of luxury in its time and the 106 Jefferson aims to continue that tradition from a fantastic luxury lobby to the unobtrusive staff who always seem to be there when you really want them to be.
It seemed like that property might have been cursed as the first property: the Bell Tavern was taken out by a fire. Then the Huntsville Hotel survived not only the Civil War, but the yellow fever pandemic until two separate fires took it out.
A few years later, in 1928, the Alabama Power Company and the new Jefferson Theatre sat on that block. After 1956 Then the Hale Brothers Furniture Store was a fixture and it lasted until 2002, after 55 years in business.
The 106 Jefferson was then built as a part of that resurgence and aimed to recapture some of that luxury and history from the old hotel – with a modern flair.
The Art
I am going off of memory here – and I will tell you – Covid Brain is real. (sigh) I believe they said that over 60 pieces of art graced the 106 Jefferson – all done by local artists. That makes this place even more special to me – as I am a big proponent of supporting local businesses and artists.
If I were you, I would stop in for a cocktail at the rooftop bar and make sure to walk around and look at all the amazing works of art.
The 106 Jefferson Hotel Food
I was treated to breakfast at Revivalist Restaurant & Lounge. I had the Stuffed Cream Cheese Praline French Toast (with berries). Not to make you drool – but just look at that picture!
One of my dining companions asked where the syrup was and it simply didn’t need it – it was beyond amazing. The berries were at the peak of freshness, the bread had the perfect amount of custard soaked in and fully cooked, and they spread some kind of amazing secret paste between the slices before dusting them with powdered sugar.
The sausage was cooked just right with a crispy skin before being split in half for the plate presentation.
Add a little whipped cream and stand back – I. Ate. It. All.
The next morning we were treated to a breakfast buffet in the Baker & Able Rooftop Bar.
I could have pulled up a chair next to the platters of fresh fruit and been happy, but the scrambled eggs had fresh chives which paired beautifully with the biscuits and gravy.
They know how to feed people.
